Retired Fujian fisherman Cai Qingqi could be cycling enough kilometres a day to be a competitor at the Beijing Olympics when, in fact, his only dream is to be a spectator.
When he rode into Hong Kong on Monday carrying a flag bearing the words 'One World, One Dream, For Beijing Olympic Games', he had already clocked up 844.9km travelling from his home in Shishi city in Fujian, which he left last Wednesday.
After 22 years as a seaman and two years as a cyclist, Mr Cai, 61, short, wiry and weathered, decided it was time to make his mark and fill in time until the Beijing Olympics, which he dearly wants to see.
While most people travel by bus or train, Mr Cai, by necessity, travels by bicycle.
But he obviously likes travelling and last year rode through six central mainland provinces before returning home, having covered 5,000km.
'My dream is watching the Games in Beijing. But I am poor, so I will be riding my bicycle to Beijing. You could say this is training for that journey,' Mr Cai said.
