Race against time

Given the opportunity and a willing ear, most wives I know in Hong Kong would complain about their husband's schedule. And if he has a high-powered job plus a time-consuming hobby, things can get even trickier.

My husband is a triathlete. Competing in long-distance races that include swimming, cycling and running is his hobby, and he fits in his training around his job.

He spends almost 20 hours a week challenging his fitness levels and pushing his body.

He's constantly watching what he eats, monitoring his protein intake, and investing in the latest equipment to make him faster.

I've been called a martyr, my girlfriends have asked how I put up with it, and I've even been told I should put a stop to it - the 'it' being the time-consuming training. I laughed when I was recently described as a triathlon widow - although I haven't told my husband.

I wake up alone every day. On Saturday and Sunday mornings I rise bright and early with the children ... to find my husband missing and the corner of the dining room, where he usually puts his bicycle, empty.
