What drives it? A 1,799cc, 140-brake-horsepower,  16-valve, four-cylinder  i-VTEC petrol engine  with programmed fuel injection, a five-speed automatic or manual box, and MacPherson strut front and multi-link double-wishbone rear suspension disk brakes.

How fast is it? Manual version 0-100km/h in 8.4 seconds. 17.7kg/m torque at 4,300.

How safe is it? Very. The new Civic won the gold,  top safety pick from the Insurance Institution of Highway safety with a  35 per cent increase in chassis stiffness, a new advanced compatibility engineering body structure, anti-lock braking, electronic brake force distribution, four airbags and more.

How thirsty is it? 17km/litre on a 50-litre tank.

Nice touches: Sleek body, fine interior and just right for Hong Kong.

Available: VTi automatic version's $185,000, basic version's $175,000 from Reliance Motors (tel: 2827 8622). Manual versions cost $5,000 less.
