Friends of the Earth, Hong Kong, (FoE HK) is inviting young people to take part in a tree-planting competition.

The second Tree-planting Challenge is organised by the conservation group and sponsored by energy supplier Towngas.

The challenge, on April 30, aims to promote the message 'sweat for trees'.

The slogan highlights the need to protect trees and vegetation as they take many years to grow.

The activity also aims to promote healthy and fun activities such as hiking.

This year, the mission is to green a remote site at Shing Mun Country Park which was destroyed by hill fire last year and set up a firebreak with 10,000 fire-resistant seedlings of Schima superba.

Schima superba stores a high level of water and does not easily burn, so it helps prevent the spread of hill fires. A fully-grown Schima superba can be over 10 metres tall.
