A CALL for the Government to pay more attention to the needs of single-parent families has received lukewarm response from the administration.

Councillors supported the motion moved by Fred Li Wah-ming, who called on the Government to solve the housing problem of single-parent families and to set up an independent working group as soon as possible to form a long-term policy.

Mr Li said in view of the more than 30,000 single-parent families, the Government should adopt a special policy to solve their problems.

He said housing and financial assistance were the major help they wanted and suggested the Housing Authority provide more flats for them at cheaper prices, as well as giving them priority in the quota.

Child care facilities should be increased to enable single parents to get a job and sustain their families, Mr Li said. He also recommended educating the public to remove discrimination.

Liberal Party legislator Selina Chow Liang Shuk-yee suggested that the families should be given emergency support services if the parents became sick.
