IVE pip PolyU on penalties

Philips

The Institute of Vocational Education (IVE) were crowned champions of this year's Philips Hong Kong Universities Football League, following a penalty shoot-out victory over Polytechnic University (PolyU).

IVE beat PolyU 6-5 on penalties, after a 0-0 stalemate at the Joint Sports Centre in Kowloon Tong on Sunday.

The champions will now be involved in the Philips Lighting International Soccer Sevens in May. The league, sponsored by Philips for the fifth year, featured 33 matches over a four-month period. A total of 11 teams representing each tertiary institute in Hong Kong took part in the competition.

Timothy Fok Tsun-ting, president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, who was a guest at the final, said the standard of football among tertiary institutes had improved.

'If this standard can be sustained, Hong Kong will produce more outstanding players, and our teams will play a significant role in major competitions in Asia,' he said.
