Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service
Where: 36 Oi Kwan Road, Wan Chai.
What: The charity has been providing a variety of social services for residents of Wan Chai and Causeway Bay since 1982. Over the years, it has extended its services to provide psychiatric rehabilitation, childcare services, and assistance for the elderly, youth and families in Kowloon and New Territories.
Its Integrated Mental Health Service Unit is one of four major organisations in Hong Kong that help people with mental illness. A particular focus is on chronic patients aged 16 to 60. The charity also runs an Adolescent Early Intervention Programme, which provides assistance to young people aged 13 to 25 who are at high risk of, or are recovering from, early psychosis, depression or an anxiety disorder.
Volunteer: Ada Chin, 25, has been a volunteer with Baptist Oi Kwan Social Service for more than year. A former sufferer of depression, she was once a participant in the charity's Adolescent Early Intervention Programme (EIP).
'Many teenagers who take part in EIP suffer from early depression or psychosis [a severe mental disorder]. They come from a wide variety of backgrounds. They can be straight-A students, school dropouts or unemployed young people. I mainly help with running recreational activities, interest classes and monthly outings for them.
