THE Vocational Training Centre is offering training course for stevedore supervisors and experienced stevedores to increase their awareness of safety working practices for shipboard cargo handling.

  Initially, three such courses would be organised and more would be offered in the first quarter of 1994, a Marine Department spokesman said.

  The first course in the series will begin today (Friday) and the other two will begin on December 7 and 15.

  Each course will last for two days.

  The courses will cover:    Basic theories in cargo lifting appliances.

   Handing of various types of cargo using correct slinging and lifting methods and appliances.

   Legislation on cargo handling safety.

   Handling of dangerous goods.

   Health and safety hazards at work.

   Manual handling.

   Using personal protective equipment and fire-fighting equipment.

  Earlier this year, the Marine Department set up an in-house working group to review the safety of cargo handling activities within Hong Kong waters.

  ''As a result of the reviews, recommendations were put forth to the Director of Marine that training courses should be organised to educate workers in the stevedoring industry on safer working practices for shipboard cargo handling,'' the spokesman said.

  Consequently, the Seamen's Training Centre of the Vocational Trading Council joined with the Marine Department to implement the recommendations.

     Each course can take 10 to 12 members who will have to attend lectures and to take part in practical sessions.
