Major port operators have pushed back a key step in their plans to replace paper receipts with an electronic system as truckers dig in against the change.
'We are aware of their [truckers'] concerns and will postpone the implementation of the elimination of the old system for a month for further discussion,' said Alan Lee, chairman of the Hong Kong Container Terminal Operators Association.
Groups such as the Hong Kong Container Tractor Owner Association and Hong Kong Truckers Association have demanded that the paper system remain and were backed in their demands by the Hong Kong Logistics Council at a meeting on Friday.
Port operators are attempting to gain acceptance for an electronic terminal receipt system run by OnePort, the e-trade management firm set up by Hongkong International Terminals, Modern Terminals and Cosco-HIT Terminals.
'We will not use OnePort and demand to continue receiving paper receipts directly from terminal operators,' said Wong Charn-kwan, director of the Hong Kong Tractor Owner Association.
OnePort had planned to stop issuing paper receipts from April 1.
