The Hong Kong Organic Farm (HKOF) in Yuen Long  is giving students an exciting opportunity to  experience the fun of organic farming.

With support from property developer Sino Group, the HKOF has sent invitations to all primary, secondary and international schools in Hong Kong inviting them on a free field trip to the farm between now and May.

So far, almost 4,000  young people from more than 60 schools have registered to participate in the programme.

HKOF guides will introduce the students to organic farming methods which use natural resources, and eco-farming materials such as compost and natural pesticides.

The visitors will also be allowed to pick some fruit and vegetables to make a healthy lunch for themselves.

The farm has a variety of organic produce, including lettuce, strawberries, tomatoes, turnips and cacti (which can be used to make fresh juice).

The organisers hope that, through this hands-on experience, students will learn more about  protecting the environment and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

Also, they hope the tour will encourage students to think about the relationship between mankind, society and nature.

Angus Cheng, Sino Group's general manager, says that an organic lifestyle includes more than just eating healthy food. It also means being concerned about the environment, ecology and other social issues.

He also believes that the field trip will help students develop their interest in learning through extracurricular activities and broaden their knowledge beyond what is in their textbooks.

Schools can apply for a trip by replying to the invitation sent by the organisers. No more than 100 students and teachers can go on each trip.

Students can also take part in a competition which aims to encourage them to make use of what they  learn at the organic farm in their daily lives.

The competition is divided into three categories: the Organic Farm Diary Design for primary school students, the Organic Recipe Design for lower secondary students, and the Organic Innovation Design for upper secondary students.

The deadline for competition entries is June 2. The winners will receive book coupons and their designs will be showcased in Sino Group's shopping malls.
