Students from City University of Hong Kong (CityU) are using new technology to help Hong Kong businesses with everything from placing orders in flower markets via mobile phones to stopping jewellery thefts.

Thirty final-year department of information students put together the 11 company-sponsored projects on display at the 'Knowledge Mobilisation in E-business Exhibition' at the university last week.

Ivan Wong Wai-lun, a member of the trio that developed a mobile bar-code recognition and management system for Motorola, said the sponsor had outlined what it required and they had done their best to comply.

The company commissioned the students to develop a bar-code system that made it easier for their customers to buy things, such as flowers, using Motorola's mobile phones.

By using their phones to read bar codes stuck to the flowers, buyers can get all the information they need about the product. They can also use the same system to confirm having received the flowers from delivery staff.

'We did everything from designing different models to finding the best solution to their problems,' Mr Wong said.
