Marriage With A Fool, a romantic comedy starring Canto-pop star Alex Fong Lik-sun and former Cookies member Stephy Tang Lai-yan, is a story about, you guessed it, marriage.

Fong plays Wah, a young man who marries his first love Bo (Tang). The young couple lead a happy life until Wah bumps into Josephine (Pace Wu), a beautiful woman who was his neighbour and private tutor when he was a boy.

The two begin to meet secretly and the sensitive Bo finds out. Things gradually spiral out of control, leaving the young couple on the verge of divorce.

Written and directed by Ye Nian-chen, the film is at best a cheery comedy and at worst a childish farce. Like many new directors, Ye is good at capturing the audience's attention - Fong and Tang attract eager teenage fans while the subject of marriage is likely to appeal to older viewers. But he fails to add substance to the interesting plot, which renders the film a sketchy portrait of young love rather than an insightful study of marriage.

There are some comedic moments, but they tend to be silly.

Fong's effort is admirable, but his hard work is undone by his inconsistent role. And Tang's lifeless acting further diminishes her one-dimensional role. When it comes to acting, Tang and Fong are still amateurs and they lack that star quality, despite their good looks.
