Lin Wei-chou urges people to abandon all political parties

Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party suffered another blow yesterday when one of its legislators dropped a bombshell by quitting the party.

Blaming both President Chen Shui-bian and his independence-leaning DPP for focusing merely on political confrontation with the opposition, DPP Young Turk Lin Wei-chou announced his withdrawal yesterday, despite efforts by party chairman Yu Shyi-kun to convince him to stay.

'I have had enough of the incessant political fighting between the pan-green and pan-blue camps,' said Mr Lin, referring to the longstanding bickering between the pro-independence green camp and the pro-unification blue camp.

He vowed to kick off a campaign asking all people to quit political parties and stay neutral to prevent the island becoming a 'torched land' due to non-stop squabbling between the two camps.

Mr Lin's action came just one day after the leader of the main opposition Kuomintang, Ma Ying-jeou, returned from a successful US visit that won him praise at home and in the US.

Mr Lin's resignation deals a big blow to the DPP, which has yet to recover from last year's humiliating defeat in local government polls.
