Nightmares on Wax

In a Space Outta Sound

(Warp)

From Leeds in northern England comes Nightmares on Wax's fifth album since their crude, rave-drenched debut in 1989.

Through a progression of dance and hip-hop, the outfit (George Evelyn and Kevin Harper) found a comfort zone in their own brand of trip-hop. Kicking off this set, Passion comes on a bit Portishead, although more skewed, thanks to a short sampled female utterance.

The mood on In a Space, although always laid-back and not a little spaced out, never hovers in the same style or patchwork of styles for too long. Instrumental You Wish takes a turn down the late-60s psychedelic organ route, with a deliberate scratchy old vinyl taint.

Tribal Afro-beat leads the way in bossa nova ditty Deepdown, the album's only truly unsettling number that alludes to the name of this musical collective.

It's hard not to be lured into the hypnotic simplicity of pared-down skank Flip Ya Lid, featuring the mellow vocals and whistles of Ricky Rankin.

And at the other end of the production spectrum is Damn, featuring the sublime harmonised vocals of Amanda Evelyn and the Chyna B Gospel Choir, interwoven with funky drums and bass line and minimal broadcast voice sample.

Slickly mixed, this album is not overproduced - sometimes seemingly recorded at live jamming sessions, other times in a tiny basic studio but always with loads of atmosphere - a true accomplishment for an album that involves an excessive amount of knob twiddling.
