Cheuk's a two-try hero as local heroes thrill the home crowd with convincing victory over stunned Americans

They say that confidence is everything, and yesterday Hong Kong proved that was all they needed as they convincingly beat the United States 35-17 in front of a packed house.

Roared on by the crowd, Hong Kong cut loose and finally put to bed the inferiority complex that had been hanging over them since the tournament began.

It was refreshing to see a Hong Kong team - that was truly representative of the region - play with such style and panache.

The calmness of veteran Nigel D'Acre was still needed to keep a hand on the tiller, but the youthful exuberance of Ricky Cheuk Ming-yin and Mark Wright, who scored two tries each, coupled with the hard graft of Jeff Wong, Ka Chun-kwok, Tsang Hing-hung and Justin Gregory was what caught the eye.

'The pressure was on us to put in a good performance after all the hard work we'd done over the past year,' Cheuk said.

'I scored my first try here in 2001 but every try I score in front of the South Stand is brilliant, I love it. So to get two today is unbelievable. The crowd really got behind us and it really gives you a lift when you have that kind of support. It's definitely a massive win for us.'
