2,000 Chinese heads will help university team ensure hats, glasses fit
Do you find designer eyewear never quite fits, or sports helmets are just too big for your head?
It could just be that manufacturers have no idea of the dimensions of Chinese heads and faces.
Now a Polytechnic University researcher is leading a $6.2 million project to change that.
Roger Ball, head of the university's Asian Ergonomic Laboratory, blames the 'mismatches' on the lack of a databank that would enable western manufacturers to design products that fit their Chinese buyers properly.
Professor Ball, also an assistant professor of the university's school of design, became aware of the problem after hearing complaints from local friends and colleagues. He plans to take his team, along with a state-of-the art head and face scanner, to six mainland provinces to measure head sizes and facial features.
