HONG Kong's top sports official, A. de O. Sales, fresh from being awarded the highest honour from the Olympic Council of Asia, yesterday warned the Government not to jeopardise the future structure of local sport. Sales, president of the Amateur Sports Federation and Olympic Committee for more than 40 years, was awarded the Order of Merit by the OCA for his outstanding contribution to sport in Asia. He returned to Hong Kong yesterday from Kuwait, where he was given the honour, and promptly issued the warning to the Government's funding arm, the Sports Development Board, who are involved in a controversial merger with the Hong Kong Sports Institute. Said Sales: ''This award highlights who are the true leaders in Hong Kong sport. ''They are trying to take over the Institute, and only now the Institute people realise it was a mistake. ''They are jeopardising the future of Hong Kong sport if they carry on interfering with the National Sports Associations.''
