DICK Whittington's side-kick, the cat, is a star all round this week.

Not only will the cat help pump 10 per cent of the proceeds of the Hong Kong Players' first performance next Thursday into Operation Santa Claus but the actress who plays it won the senior category of this year's SCMP-RTHK Short Story Competition.

Not surprisingly, 27 year-old Marie Yuen, of Sha Tin, wrote her story on the theme Behind Closed Doors. about the obstacles facing several people auditioning for a play. The message is 'never give up'.

And that sounds like a good motto for Operation Santa Claus, whose total soared to $218,293 yesterday.

As the cash rolls in, more community and business organisations are coming up with money-making ideas in a bid to hit this year's $5 million target.
