It was almost a great night last Thursday as the Red Bar and Restaurant in IFC held a preview party for its coming live jazz gigs with Eugene Pao and friends, due to start every Thursday from April 20. The idea of listening to guitarist Pao under the stars in Central seemed very promising. Thus, it was a slight letdown when everyone discovered the gig would be on the inside portion rather than the spacious outdoor patio. 'Noise regulations,' Red's PR rep said, pointing to the luxury hotel next door as a potential complainant. At least it was cool to catch up with musicians like pianist Ted Lo (right), who's been maintaining a lower performance profile with the current lack of proper jazz venues. 'I hope this gig can last,' says Lo, who has been helping out his star nephew. In six months, Justin Lo has gained acclaim as a Canto-pop singer who can actually sing. 'Yeah, he's so big these days, he doesn't even talk to me now,' Ted joked.
