Senior mainland officials have called on the Hong Kong government to step up efforts to promote the Basic Law to the community.
The remarks were made during Secretary for Justice Wong Yan-lung's first working visit to Beijing as justice minister. Mr Wong was received by Sheng Huaren , vice-chairman and secretary-general of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, the committee's deputy secretary-general Qiao Xiaoyang and director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Liao Hui .
Mr Wong said he believed the central government understood Hong Kong people's reservation about 'casual' interpretations of the mini-constitution, although the issue had not been not discussed yesterday.
'Mr Sheng said he was quite satisfied with the performance of the Hong Kong government and stressed that the central government's measures regarding Hong Kong were for the welfare of the city,' Mr Wong said.
Mr Sheng was quoted by Xinhua as saying the NPC and its Standing Committee shouldered a huge responsibility in implementing the 'one country, two systems' formula and the Basic Law.
The state leader said the responsibility was commensurate with the powers vested in them under the Basic Law.
