The family of a paralysed police officer and a quadriplegic have lambasted western medicine practitioners as being too conservative and unwilling to adopt innovations like their mainland counterparts.

In a letter to Constable Jacky Chu Chun-kwok, who has been in a near-vegetative state due to brain damage caused by blood loss since he was stabbed in the neck while on patrol in Cheung Sha Wan last July, Tang Siu-pun, better known as Ah Bun, urged Constable Chu to keep up the fight and walk again.

Ah Bun's letter was handed to the wife of the wounded constable yesterday, the same day the Court of First Instance sentenced Constable Chu's attacker to six years' jail.

Ah Bun was paralysed in an accident 15 years ago. He touched Hongkongers' hearts when he appealed to former chief executive Tung Chee-hwa and legislators to let him die in April 2004.

In yesterday's letter, Ah Bun encouraged the officer to try unconventional methods.

'I am so happy that Beijing brain expert Dr Ling Feng will look at your case,' he said, adding it was a glimpse of light in a dark tunnel.

Dr Ling visited Constable Chu on Monday during a brief visit to Hong Kong, resulting in a revision of treatment plans.
