Wider choice for Form Four

Lilian Goh

Form Four students may be able to take weight management, law, comic art, advertising, or broadcasting as a formal subject under the Career-oriented Curriculum (COC) in the next academic year.

Launched by the Education and Manpower Bureau (EMB) in 2003, COC offers a wider choice for Form Four and Five students, in addition to the traditional HKCEE subjects.

The EMB has invited nine professional institutions to help provide a total of 34 two-year courses to fourth formers in the 2006/07 school year.

It has cancelled some unpopular programmes and introduced 18 new courses covering six mainstream areas - applied science; business, management and law; creative studies; engineering and production; media and communication; and services.

Some of the courses include Healthy Living and Weight Management, The Essence of Law, Commercial Comic Art, Application Development for Mobile Devices, Radio Host Broadcasting Skills and Hospitality Services in Practice.

The most popular programmes in the past were about fashion design, cuisine and cosmetology.

The EMB will subsidise 82 per cent of the course fee, with each student having to pay between $954 and $1,980. Needy students can apply for a further reduction.
