The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) will host the finals of the annual 21st Century - Lenovo Cup National English Speaking Competition next March. With participants from more than 500 universities and tertiary institutions on the mainland, Hong Kong and Macau, the competition provides a chance for students to exchange public speaking skills. It also gives them an opportunity to improve their English-language skills, broaden their horizon and enhance their competitiveness and confidence. The competition consists of three parts - prepared speeches, impromptu speeches and a question-and-answer session with a panel of judges. The topics cover international affairs, social issues and daily life. Students can be nominated by their own institutions. In the preliminary round starting in June, each contestant will need to submit a 500-word essay and an audio tape of the speech. An oral test will then be conducted over the phone. The best speakers stand to win cash prizes, study trips or scholarships.
