Playing 'party' politics

AS ANYONE who has been near So Kon Po lately will tell you, the new Government Stadium is looking like the billion dollars it cost. Funny then that everyone involved is keeping quiet about its opening ceremony.

The new-look 40,000-seater stadium is set to re-open on March 11, but as yet there has been no official word on just what form the party will take. Dr Ronald Leung Ding-bong, chairman of the Urban Council (which had to cough up $100 million in finishing costs), was circumspect when approached last week.

He promised an ''Olympic style'' ceremony with at least some of the kings and queens of Canto-pop and a world-class international act.

Alan Murray, chief executive officer of Wembley International, which runs the stadium, was equally evasive but dropped hints about the event being a stunning ''sight and sound spectacular'', which does nothing to dampen widely circulated rumours that Jean-Michel Jarre may be coming to town.

Indeed, rumour has it the Frenc h laser and synthesiser genius has already sent assistants to town to check out the facilities.

''I can't say who it is because I don't want people to be disappointed,'' Dr Leung said.
