We can just dream, while Canning fok takes the fast lane to promised land
Most white-collar workers, such as Lai See, can only dream of becoming billionaires - it is glimpsing eternity to imagine that it takes a thousand years for the average person on a million a year to reach the Promised Land.
But there is a fast track and that's when you're lucky enough to be Li Ka-shing's most trusted lieutenant. Hutchison Whampoa group managing director Canning Fok Kin-ning took nine years to make the mission possible.
Yesterday, we learned that Mr Fok made nearly $131 million last year, his seventh straight year on a nine-digit pay cheque.
Even then, his salary was actually down 4.1 per cent from 2004 when he made $136.64 million.
Mr Fok invested a large part of his money in Hutchison property, phones and even Hutchison shares. Who wouldn't hold up loyalty as a cardinal virtue if it means becoming a billionaire?
