Bank offers Shanghai trip and internship
The Standard Chartered Bank has launched a new programme to help young people develop their potential. The programme includes a visit to Shanghai and a summer internship at the bank.
The Priority Academy, which aims to help participants gain more exposure and broaden their horizons, is designed for the children of Priority Banking customers.
It is open to youngsters aged between 11 and 17, whose parents have at least $800,000 in savings, investment or insurance contracts with the bank.
Standard Chartered hopes to provide a range of activities to stimulate the participants' imagination and enhance their creativity.
The bank said the new initiative is in line with a trend among Hongkongers who are more willing to invest in their children's education.
The Priority Academy, launched earlier this week, includes a Shanghai Learning Tour, a Summer Banking Knowledge Internship Programme and a Studying in the United States Seminar.
The 10-day Shanghai tour will give young people the opportunity to attend lessons at Fudan University and experience the local culture by staying with a family in the city.
Ten lucky candidates will be selected to join the all-expenses-paid trip from July 16 to 25. The deadline for applications is May 10.
The bank will invite about 100 teenagers, divided into four groups, to take part in its summer internship programme.
The programme will help them gain in-depth knowledge of the banking industry. By working together with the staff, they will also get a taste of what it's like to be working in a bank in Hong Kong.
Standard Chartered has appointed Chan Yik-hei - the Form Five student after whom a minor planet was named last year - as the Priority Academy ambassador.
The 16-year-old said he was interested in learning new things apart from science. Yik-hei encouraged his peers to get out of the classroom and meet people. This would make them more aware of what's happening around them, he said.
Yik-hei will not be able to join the Priority Academy since he will be taking a summer course at the University of California, Los Angeles.
