When I read the latest tech world headlines often a certain thrash rock lyric washes over me. 'So what? So what?' it goes, and then dissolves into expletives.

It's not that I've contracted Tourette's Syndrome, it's just that the subject matter of so many of the tech reports and press releases you see on the internet strike me as trite.

I keep feeling like I have accidentally wandered into a story in the San Francisco-based spoof newspaper the Onion, which routinely publishes stories that have no content or consequence. Just look at some of the stories doing the rounds.

One that particularly bugs me is the 'skin care for your iPod' story, which reveals how to shield your favourite gadget from scratches and the sun with 'cool-looking GelaSkins'. I wasn't aware that the iPod was such a delicate creature in need of oodles of attention, and I don't care.

I feel equally indifferent towards son-of-iPod, Apple's new mobile video player, which has won enormous coverage. In fact, again, the product strikes me as pointless - walking down the street in Asia's world city is hazardous enough without trying to watch a video clip in the palm of your hand.

When the media spotlight swings away from silly products that nobody needs, it is often only to highlight some incredibly tedious, cryptic phenomenon of interest to three geeks on the planet. Consider a recent headline that reads: 'Parsing Ellison's Linux comment' - I have come across Zen koans that make more sense.
