WOMEN will become the major target group for the Government in raising AIDS consciousness, the Acting Director of Health said yesterday.

Dr Margaret Chan Fung Fu-chun, speaking at an AIDS Awareness Day event, said the Government had been focusing on the ''high risk'' groups such as drug addicts and homosexuals over the last 10 years.

However, as AIDS was spreading rapidly throughout the world, people from different walks of life would be equally likely to be infected by the AIDS virus.

Dr Chan said as women played an important role in their families and the community, they should know how to protect themselves against the disease.

''Since pregnant women will also infect their babies if they carry the AIDS virus, they also have to be careful to protect themselves,'' she said.

Dr Chan said up to October this year, 408 people in Hong Kong had been confirmed to have been infected with the AIDS virus.
