Top award for Post photo

The South China Morning Post's coverage of last December's World Trade Organisation protests has been recognised with a top photography award from one of Asia's most influential media organisations.

Post photographer Martin Chan's image of protesters being penned in by police with water cannons won the gold award for spot news photography at the Asia Media Awards in Kuala Lumpur last night.

Chan's picture - one of the scores published in the Post depicting the week of anti-globalisation protests that ended in riots more violent than any other in Hong Kong since the 1960s - was published in the Sunday Morning Post on December 18.

The annual Asia Media Awards are hosted by Ifra Asia, the regional arm of Ifra, the world's leading organisation for newspaper and media publishing, and are open to all newspaper and magazine publishers across Asia-Pacific.

Ifra serves as an association and networking platform for more than 2,000 publishing companies and suppliers to the publishing industry from more than 60 countries.
