A $100 million scholarship programme has been launched to mark the centenary of export trading and retailing corporation The Li & Fung Group.

The programme, set up by the Li & Fung Foundation, will offer 100 one-off grants a year for Hong Kong undergraduates to study abroad and for mainland students to study in Hong Kong.

Participating students will spend a year at a university in the new setting which is intended to enable them to gain a deeper understanding of their subject and exposure to diverse cultures and environments.

Dr Victor Fung, chairman of the foundation's board, said: 'The creation of the Li & Fung Scholarships programme reflects Li & Fung's longstanding commitment to building human capital in the communities in which the group operates.

'We believe the Fung Scholars will benefit greatly from this programme and, with wider exposure and experience, will be able to contribute much more to the community at large.'

All Hong Kong's seven publicly-funded universities plus the Hong Kong Institute of Education have been invited to take part in the programme, which the foundation hopes will start as soon as possible.
