If you like your sashimi and sushi prepared on the premises yet want to avoid the high prices and crowds of some of the more popular eateries, Tsukiji Market has it all and more. Tucked away on Gage Street, in Central, this restaurant has a downstairs area with three high tables and chairs, which share the space with a small selection of Japanese grocery items and a chiller with Korean and Japanese sake from $38 a bottle. Seating for larger groups is upstairs. It's the price, selection and quality of the food here that make it such a find. Six small pieces of maki cost from $10, while six pieces of California roll are $32. Snapper, salmon and shako sushi cost $4 a piece; tuna, shime-saba, crab roe and surf clam are $5 each; and $13 will buy you uni sea urchin. A 46-piece sashimi set with live akagai shell is $198; a 30-piece sushi set is $109. Menu items also include spicy tsubugai snail ($10) and miso soup ($8). The restaurant is open daily from 11am to 9.30pm and offers a 10 per cent discount on deliveries if you order before noon.
