The number of contractual disputes over construction projects heard by the Supreme Court last year totalled 70,129 and involved 30.65 billion yuan. Many were land disputes but a breakdown was not available.

Meanwhile, arable land fell by 361,600 hectares, of which 138,700 hectares was used for construction. The Ministry of Land and Resources also found that a substantial amount of land was developed without official approval.
