I WOULD like to reply to questions regarding British National Overseas passports posed by one of your correspondents, Stephen Lau (South China Morning Post, December 1).

  The BN (O) status will remain for life for its holder unless voluntarily renounced. The Chinese Memorandum annexed to the Joint Declaration has guaranteed that Chinese nationals in Hong Kong after 1997 may use this passport for the purpose of travelling to other states and regions.

  Consular protection for holders of this passport when in third countries has also been guaranteed in the United Kingdom Memorandum annexed to the Joint Declaration.
