A police spokesman stressed that 'twice the normal stopping distance' was required under wet weather conditions. Motorists were urged to reduce speed and extend distance between themselves and vehicle in front. And they were also advised to turn on headlights to increase visibility and pay attention in changing lanes. According to Hong Kong police statistics, there are about 15,000 traffic accidents every year. Wet roads or reduced visibility caused by bad weather has led to accidents on the territory's busy roads.
