Charges may yet be laid over alleged assaults on police
Four Macau residents arrested in Monday's labour protests were transferred to the Macau Public Prosecutions Office yesterday, but released because of a lack of evidence against them.
However, they may still face charges of attacking police and disrupting public order, depending on new evidence provided by the police.
More than 5,000 Macau residents took to the streets on Monday in a protest over labour policies, in the largest demonstration since the 1999 handover.
Labour Affairs Bureau director Shuen Ka-hung yesterday responded to the demonstration by stressing the need to revise labour laws.
'It's urgent to revise relevant laws and regulations so that the government can have laws to go by when making and implementing labour policies,' he said.
He said he was not troubled by the demonstration, in which he was urged to step down.
