CANON has five inkjet printers in the portable range which are marketed in Hong Kong by Jardine Micro Systems.

  Top of the portable Bubble Jet range from Canon is the BJ 230. This is a large format, compact printer, can handle A3-size paper and offers 10 built-in fonts and laser quality output.

  Featuring a built-in auto sheet feeder, it can work in high speed mode at 500 characters per second (cps).

  It costs about $3,500.

  The BJ 200 can produce professional looking text and graphics with enhanced 360 dots per inch (dpi) resolution and 500 cps.

  ''With 10 built-in typefaces, including Script, the BJ 200 can rival laser printers, and at a fraction of their size and price.

  ''This is the most popular model in Canon's Bubble Jet portable line,'' said Herbert Tang, marketing manager of Jardine Micro Systems, Canon's authorised agent in Hong Kong.

  It also offers auto sheet feeder and is priced at $2,400.

  The more compact model range features the BJ 20.

   It offers laser-like printer performance with sharp text and grey-scale graphics, using a range of 10 built-in typefaces, eight fonts including Script in Epson emulation mode, and two fonts in IBM mode.

  It is capable of using B5 and A4 paper sizes and can print on plain paper, envelopes and transparencies.

   It also has an optional NiCad battery package. It costs about $2,000.

   Another popular model in the portable Bubble Jet range from Canon is BJ 10ex. In high quality mode, the 10ex can work at 83 cps speed, including various type faces; it offers five fonts.

  It can take in B5 and A4-size paper.

  There are also optional automatic cut sheet feeder and an optional NiCad battery pack.

   This lightweight model weighs about 1.8 kilos and costs about $1,399.

  The fifth model in this range is the Canon BJ 10SX, which weighs 1.7 kg. It has 360 dpi resolution, which rivals some laser printers.

  There are a choice of five fonts in all, to produce good quality text and graphics.

  The paper sizes include A4 and B5. To do high volume work, one can fit an optional 50-page auto sheet feeder; also optional is the NiCad battery pack. It costs $2,000.
