MIPS Technologies Inc has launched a new version of its R4400 64-bit microprocessor working at an internal clock speed of 200 MHz, running the Microsoft Windows NT operating system on a MIPS-based PC.
The firm has also demonstrated reference designs for manufacturers to build high-performance desktop and notebook PCs based on the MIPS R4200 64-bit RISC processor for the Windows NT.
The R4200 provides similar performance to Intel's Pentium for less than one-tenth the price and power dissipation.
MIPS R4200-based notebook computers were displayed at the MIPS Technologies and NEC Electronics stands at Comdex last month.
The MIPS R4200 operates at a clock speed of 80 MHz with integer computing performance of 55 SPECint92.
It costs US$80 and is suitable for low cost, high-performance computers running Windows NT.
