Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is to undergo brain surgery after injuring himself falling out of a palm tree.

Surgeons plan to drill a hole in the skull of the guitarist and drain blood from his brain, according to British tabloid The Sun.

The 62-year-old was originally diagnosed with a concussion after hurting himself while on holiday in Fiji's exclusive Wakaya Club resort.

Richards (right) and bandmate Ronnie Wood are thought to have been climbing the trees to collect coconuts when the rocker fell, hitting his head.

After being transferred to a hospital in Auckland, he continued to complain of dull headaches, and further tests revealed a small haemorrhage.

The Sun quoted a friend as saying: 'Keith's accident has turned out worse than everybody feared. After the tests, doctors decided they should drain his skull. It has given him a scare, but he has been told that he should make a full recovery once it's done.'
