SANTA-MANIA hit Central yesterday when a platoon of the rubicund gentlemen who emerge ho-hoing around this time of year were seen dashing in and out of office buildings distributing Christmas stollen. This is a seasonal German cake full of butter, sugar, nuts, raisins and all those other things dietitians heedlessly tell us to stay well away from at all times. The Santas, bestowing tidings of goodwill were staff of the New World Harbour View hotel, who, with this gesture, were observing St Nicklaus Day by visiting their commercial clients bearing gifts. The photo-happy Japanese tourists in Queen's Road Central snapped away, having never seen so many Santas in one place. Not that the largesse didn't cause some confusion among the recipients as well. We heard that when one receptionist was given the gift-wrapped pastry to pass on to her boss she inquired what it was. ''It's stollen,'' replied the New World Santa. The girl hesitated, then warily responded: ''If it's stolen why are you bringing it here?''. Crumbs!
