THE 1993 winner of the Governor's Award for Industry: Quality is Maxtor (Hong Kong) Ltd, a producer and exporter of high-technology surface mount printed circuit board assemblies for hard disk drives under the brand name Maxtor.
The company, a local subsidiary of the major US electronics manufacturer, Maxtor Corporation, has in place a well established Total Quality Management system which complies with ISO 9002 requirements. Maxtor's manufacturing facilities are in tune with thelatest state-of-the-art equipment to ensure quality and reliability are built into its products.
The firm's team of qualified and experienced staff and technicians are committed to what the company's management maintains is ''total customer satisfaction'' which it does through ''making a conscious effort to develop its own comprehensive quality standards and employee development programmes to achieve quality targets''.
Members of the judging panel who gave the nod to Maxtor were: Sir Roger Lobo, CBE, LL.D JP (chairman); Calvin Cheung, Hong Kong Quality Management Association Ltd; Connie Lau, Consumer Council; Ricky Fung, Deputy Director-General of Industry; Brian Tyler,Assistant Director-General of Industry (Quality Services) and M.L. Wong, Assistant Director-General of Industry (Data and Services).
The 1993 Industry Department Quality Award was presented to AST Research (Far East) Ltd, a manufacturer of desktop, notebook and server personal computer products under its own brand name, AST.
