Paralysed officer rushed to intensive care with infection The meeting between football star Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and paralysed policeman Jacky Chu Chun-kwok had to be cancelled after the constable was rushed to intensive care early yesterday. The Manchester United striker flew into Hong Kong yesterday and will take part in today's launch of the Manchester United Soccer School. He was scheduled to visit Constable Chu - an avid ManU fan - at Kwong Wah Hospital in Yau Ma Tei today. But the meeting was called off because the constable came down with a viral infection and doctors decided to put him in the ICU for observation, the policeman's wife said. His infection is not life threatening. '[Jacky] has been vomiting for the past few days, and even threw up blood yesterday,' said Chu Choi Yin-ping. 'The doctors did a brain scan but found nothing wrong. They then did a gastroscopy and found an infection in his stomach.' Constable Chu was rushed to the ICU at about 1.30am and his condition has since improved. He is expected to remain there for two days, meaning he would only be out when the visiting football star has left Hong Kong. Mrs Chu was sad he had missed the opportunity to meet one of his heroes, saying he would probably be more upset at missing the meeting than worrying about his health. Solskjaer, who has overcome a knee injury nightmare that stretched over almost two years, is one of the most popular players among Manchester United supporters. The Norwegian will leave Constable Chu souvenirs including a signed Manchester United jersey and a card. Representatives from the soccer school are also planning to visit the injured policeman on Solskjaer's behalf. Mrs Chu said doctors were confident her husband would recover from his stomach infection but during the process, other treatments that he has been receiving, such as acupuncture, would have to be suspended. She added that they were confident that the suspension would not affect his recovery, which could take years. The policeman was stabbed in the neck while on patrol in Cheung Sha Wan last July. Despite being hurt Constable Chu managed to chase his attacker for about 20 metres with blood spraying from his wound before collapsing. Constable Chu has been in a near-vegetative state due to brain damage caused by severe blood loss. His attacker, Liu Chi-yung, was jailed for six years last month.
