LOCAL BANKING professionals willing to work in the mainland are highly sought after and may climb the corporate ladder faster than those based in Hong Kong.
Hang Seng Bank needs more people to expand its mainland operations and compete with other major financial players from Hong Kong, such as Standard Chartered and HSBC, who are also recruiting to increase their share of the mainland market.
The bank has 377 full-time employees servicing 12 outlets in the mainland and needs to recruit more staff from Hong Kong by the end of the year as part of a plan to have 30 outlets by 2008.
Johnson Fu Chi-king, head of China business at Hang Seng, said that as the mainland's living standards improved, an increasing number of young and ambitious banking officials considered it a suitable destination.
However, there was a shortage of labour as foreign and Hong Kong banks competed to increase their presence in the mainland.
'We need staff as of last week,' Mr Fu said.
