Vivian Chow Wai-man is back on stage this week - more than a decade after retiring. But fans of the 1980s Canto-pop singer shouldn't get their hopes up about a full-scale comeback.

Chow's three Back for Love concerts are to raise funds for the non-profit Veterinary Service Society (the well-known pet-lover has four cats and a dog).

The return hasn't been easy for Chow, who admits to cringing at some of her old songs. 'When I started practising, I had to stop the music even when I heard the intro to some of the songs,' she told Ming Pao Weekly. Initially, she wanted to mainly perform other singers' numbers, but was talked out of this so as not to let down her fans.

Not long after her last concert in 1994, Chow moved to Canada and then San Francisco with her boyfriend, Joe Ngai Jan, son of novelist Ngai Hong. She said she needed to live like a normal person after 10 years in the entertainment industry.

Chow joined RTHK as a disc jockey, after taking part in a singing contest in 1985. She released her first album, Vivian Chow, three years later to instant success, followed by such hits as Offstage Leading Actress, Lost in Love and Never Change Heart.
