Carsten Jancker made his Chinese Super League debut last night for Shanghai Shenhua but team manager Wu Jingui said the former Germany international needed to work on his fitness. Though Shanghai beat Liaoning 3-0, Jancker, who came on as a substitute in the 60th minute, struggled to make an impression.

Wu, however, isn't worried. 'That was certainly not the Jancker most of us know. But as he plays more games in the Super League the real Jancker will emerge. It won't be too long before defenders in the other teams will be having nightmares about him,' said Wu.

The 32-year-old Jancker, at 1.93 metres tall, should prove a formidable figure in attack once he returns to full fitness, added Wu. Jancker joined Shenhua from German side Kaiserslautern, where he started only five games last season.
