THE PUBLIC has been invited to help pick the 10 best books of the year as part of the '10 Recommended Books 20th Anniversary' celebrations.

The event is jointly organised by Radio Television Hong Kong and the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and it is the first time that the public has been asked to take part in the  poll.

In the past, 10 celebrities were asked to name their recommended books.

People can choose their top 10 from 42 books recommended by celebrities on the website www.rthk.org.hk/special/10books2006

The list is varied,  including novels, essays, fiction and non-fiction.

There are Chinese and English books.

Pop singer Miriam Yeung Chin-wah  recommended The Little Prince written by the well-known French aviator Antoine de Saint-Exupery.

Ostensibly a children's book, it makes profound reflections on life and love, which have moved many adults as well.

Letters Written by the Children* was recommended by singer Kelly Chan Wai-lam and Twelve Letters to the Young People* was the choice of Permanent Secretary for Economic Development and Labour Matthew Cheung Kin-chung.

Mark Haddon's The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time  nominated by the lawmaker Bernard Chan may pique your interest.

The story is about a 15-year-old autistic boy investigating a 'murder' case.

If you want to read something more analytical and practical, Collapse - How Societies Choose to Fail or Succeed written by Jared Diamond, The World is Flat by Thomas Friedman and The Little Money Book by David Boyle may help you understand the real world better.

Some Chinese classics are also shortlisted, such as The Confucian Analects, The Dream of Red Mansions and 300 Tang Poems.

The western modern classic Ulysses written by Irish writer James Joyce  is recommended by writer Lau Yee-cheung.

Book critics Ma Ka-fai and Leung Man-tao will introduce each of the books on RTHK Two from Monday to Saturday at 3pm and 9pm.

You must vote for your favourites before June 25 and the results will be announced in July.
