THE voice of reason, in the shape of effervescent Elizabeth Cassegrain Thomas, is roaring into life at the infamous Tregunter Tower - the luxury Mid-Levels apartment complex where racism directed at Filipino domestic staff has reared its repulsive head.

  Calling Keeping Posted to voice her alarm, Elizabeth was on the warpath.

   ''I am now so ashamed to even tell people that I live at Tregunter,'' she grumbled down the line.

  ''What I want to ask those stupid people who sent that note suggesting that the maids should go back to their country is: What are you going to do if they did go back?   ''I am totally reliant on my maid, who takes care of my eight-year-old daughter.

  ''I wouldn't know what to do without her. And I'm sure that goes for many of my neighbours, too.

   ''I have instructed my maid to carry on using the main lift and should anybody object, then they can deal with me.''   Blonde Elizabeth - who is Far East manager for prestigious London jewellers Asprey's - is now planning to circulate a letter to all the flats apologising to the maids for any hurt caused by the ill-breeding of a few insolent tenants.

  She explained: ''I will do it by myself, or I will rope in some of the French families living in the multi-national complex.

  ''We have to do something to put this matter behind us and address the real problems at Tregunter - far too many to mention here - which have nothing to do with maids not using the service lift.''   On other fronts, apropos the towers of shame, it's heartening also to be able to report that the unsavoury characteristics of some of the grown-ups have not permeated through to the ranks of the young at Tregunter.

  We've had touching news about some of the children living at the apartment complex who apparently have scrawled messages of support for the maids in the lifts.

  Meanwhile, the Keeping Posted hotline continues to receive information about the racists hiding behind the cloak of respectability at Tregunter.

  Our attention has been drawn particularly to a ''European gentleman in Block A'' whose attitude towards the maids in the main lifts at his block, as described to us, borders on neo-Nazism.

  If anyone would like to give us more details on this particular tenant we would be quite happy to put the boot in.
