After a year of re-routing and traffic confusion, the new Causeway Bay flyover opens today at 10am. Only one of the two lanes will open for now, and the Transport Department has not announced when the second lane will be ready. The old one-lane flyover will close and be demolished later. 'Eastbound traffic along Victoria Park Road heading towards Causeway Bay, Tai Hang and Causeway Road will be diverted to the new flyover,' a department spokesman said. 'We expect the opening of the flyover will smooth traffic in the Causeway Bay area significantly.' The project, originally budgeted for $73 million and scheduled to take two years to complete, has finished in half the time. Officials said the new bridge would help relieve congestion in the area. The department said police would be posted to direct traffic, while new signs had been put up to guide motorists. Drivers with questions are advised to call the department's hotline at 2804-2600, or the government hotline, 1823. The department said opening the flyover over the weekend at a time of reduced traffic flow would allow officials to determine how well drivers would adjust to the new routing ahead of Monday morning traffic, which is usually the heaviest of the week.
