The running community is mourning the death of Malcolm Phillips, who died at his home on Lamma Island last week, aged 53.
Phillips was a co-founder of the Tsuen Wan Athletic Club (TWAC) and it was as a member of the club that he met his wife, Cindy Lau.
Phillips came to Hong Kong in 1975 and joined the Royal Hong Kong Police Force. He soon became a serious runner, competing in events from track and field to full marathons, and even the 100-kilometre Trailwalker. As a founding member of the Hong Kong Amateur Athletic Association's distance running committee, Phillips also helped set up a number of events, including the Henry Shield Relay Race, which he launched in the late 1980s, and the China Coast Marathon. He celebrated his 50th birthday by running the 42.2km race, one of the most demanding full marathon events in Asia.
More recently Phillips was one of three runners to help train blind runner Lau Cheung-wai to achieve his goal of running under four hours in this year's Hong Kong Marathon.
A memorial service will be held at the Apex in Central Plaza at 7.30pm on Tuesday, while a run to celebrate his life will be held at the Peak at 8am next Sunday.
