Taiwan's main opposition Kuomintang yesterday made a concrete step towards forcing embattled Taiwanese President Chen Shui-bian to resign by creating an ad hoc committee to investigate the best way to achieve the goal.

The announcement of the committee came as KMT legislator Chiu Yi officially filed a lawsuit yesterday against Mr Chen, his wife, Wu Shu-chen, and his former chief aide, Ma Yung-cheng, for alleged corruption and negligence.

Mr Chen has come under mounting pressure to quit since his son-in-law, Chao Chien-ming, was detained for alleged insider trading, a scandal which has further dented the image of Mr Chen and his government.

In Taipei, the KMT said the ad hoc committee would examine whether a recall motion or a vote of no confidence in the cabinet would be more effective in bringing Mr Chen's presidency to an end.

'The formation of the committee represents our determination to drag down Chen Shui-bian,' said Pang Wei-kang, head of the KMT legislative caucus.

But the People First Party (PPF), chaired by James Soong Chu-yu, has pushed for a recall motion to unseat Mr Chen and yesterday insisted that was still the better option.
