Tomorrow, 8.30pm, Edge Macau four-piece rockers System Kick make their Hong Kong debut this weekend as part of the Underground series of live band shows. Singer-guitarist Geoffrey Churchill, drummer Fabbio Guzman, lead guitarist Ryan Tongga and bassist Weng Fai-Chan came together after Churchill and Weng's former band, Future Shock, fell apart in true rock'n'roll fashion. 'I think we're all music addicts,' says Churchill. 'The thing we wanted most of all was a band that worked as a band, rather than a group of musicians who get together to put on shows. 'The idea behind System Kick is a band that serves the music rather than music serving us as individuals. A band without all the politics of who is the star and wanting to look good, and more about playing and performing. 'I like to think we make music that connects with people and basically says, 'You know what, we feel this, too'. I remember as a teenager listening to music that made me say, 'That's me - that song is who I am'. So as a songwriter I'm always conscious of that 15-year-old who used to fanatically listen to his Walkman.' System Kick use rock, particularly hard rock, as a starting point, but the band members all bring different elements. Any given song might have a funk beat, a ska rhythm guitar, a heavy metal chorus, rapped verses, a progressive rock bassline or reggae rhythms. 'I think that, like all bands, we just want to get our music out there and heard, and the internet gives us a broader vision,' says Churchill. 'Three out of the four members of the band are people you could call international, so we have family all over the globe. I guess that gives us a wider idea of our audience than we could have had 15 years ago.' System Kick will be supported by local bands An Id Signal, Alok's 31G and Hard Candy. 60 Wyndham St, Central, $40. Inquiries: 9486 4648
